Course Description

It is widely accepted that greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide produced from burning fossil fuels, are the main contributors to climate change. Fossil fuels currently satisfies approximately 88% of the global commercial primary energy demand and in spite of the significant efforts to increase energy production from renewable sources, fossil fuels are predicted to continually play a major role in near-future energy supply. To mitigate climate change while meeting energy demand, the UK and other developed countries have set ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions through carbon capture and storage (CCS). The course is strongly supported by academic research. The Department of Offshore, Process and Energy Engineering has recently been granted two major UK Research Council funded projects in Carbon Capture and Carbon Transport. Cranfield University has a world class reputation for its industrial scale research and pilot-scale demonstration programmes in the Energy sector. The taught programme is generally delivered from October to March and includes ten compulsory modules. The 10 compulsory modules are delivered over one to two weeks of intensive delivery with the later part of the module being free from structured teaching to allow time for more independent learning and reflection. The ten compulsory modules are: Carbon Capture Technologies Carbon Transport Technologies Management for Technology Reliability and Risk Analysis Process Plant Operations Power Generation Systems Process Measurement Systems Advanced Control Systems Process Simulation and Design Computational Engineering Techniques for Industrial Processes Students on the part-time programme will complete all of the compulsory modules based on a flexible schedule that will be agreed with the Course Director.
