Course Description

The MSc in Design of Rotating Machines aims to train suitable candidates in the design of modern machinery in a teaching and research environment. Great emphasis is placed on a creative and imaginative approach to design, balanced against a company?s requirement for profitable manufacture, quality assurance and global marketability. The course consists of a lecture programme and a dissertation. Methods of analysis, theory and practical applications should enable students to deal with design problems varying from conceptual design and project management to complete structural integrity and dynamic performance assessment. Students have access to CAE tools, gear design software, FEAFEM software packages and rotor dynamics software. Significant exposure to these modern, state-of-the-art tools and associated techniques enables students to exploit this technology for maximum benefit, while being mindful of good engineering practice and international standards. In addition, students will be able to demonstrate good design management and communication skills within a group working environment. On completion of the course of lectures, students will be equipped with adequate knowledge to design a wide range of machines, be able to mathematically model a range of components and machine assemblies and deal with a variety of engineering problems. Structure The MSc in Design of Rotating Machines comprises taught modules and a research project. The modules are shown below: ? Computer Aided Engineering ? Management for Technology ? Data Analysis ? Noise and Vibration ? Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics ? Stress Analysis of Machine Component ? Gear Design ? Condition monitoring and vibration diagnosis of rotating machines ? Mathematical Modelling for Vibration Analysis ? Mini Design Projects ? Rotor Dynamics ? Management of Technology.
