Course Description

AIMS This MA provides an in-depth grounding in the politics and policy of the EU. The programme covers the intricate politics, institutions, law and policies of the European Union as well as the international and global political context in which the EU is located. This MA is a good preparation for graduates who wish to develop a career with a European dimension. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION The focus is on contemporary developments in the European Union in terms of its politics, law and policies. You take two compulsory modules (40 credits) four optional modules (80 credits) and complete a dissertation (60 credits). Compulsory modules cover: integration in Europe and theories and approaches in the study of politics. Typical optional modules include: the European Union as an international actor Africa ? the politics of international development international relations theory workshop in American foreign policy making the politics of global change theories and theorists of international political economy transitional justice critical geopolitics globalisation, poverty and development global justice and human rights war, terrorism and peace ? ethical perspectives the rise of China doing political research and the politics of fear ? identity and security in international politics. Teaching is seminar based and most modules are assessed by a 4,000-word research paper on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with the module leader. Students complete a 12,000-word dissertation during the summer. TYPICAL FUNDING UKEU students - full or partial fees bursaries may be available from the School.
