Course Description

AIMS This programme provides you with a comprehensive and in-depth grounding in the approaches to understanding contemporary international society. It is designed to give graduates from this programme the expertise and skills appropriate for a range of public and private sector careers where an advanced knowledge and understanding of contemporary international society is needed or desirable. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION This flexible programme addresses contemporary international dynamics through a range of theoretical, empirical and area-based approaches. It appeals to students seeking an international dimension to their study, which can be applied in a range of academic and non-academic careers. You take compulsory modules (40 credits) which cover: international relations theory and theories and approaches in the study of politics: power and democracy. You also take optional modules (80 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). Typical optional modules include: the European Union as an international actor Africa ? the politics of international development the state in the international political economy workshop in American foreign policy making the rise of China the politics of global change theories and theorists of international political economy transitional justice critical geopolitics globalisation, poverty and development global justice and human rights war, terrorism and peace ? ethical perspectives democracy in divided societies and the politics of fear ? identity and security in international politics. Teaching is seminar based and most modules are assessed by a 4,000-word research paper on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with the module leader. Students complete a 12,000-word dissertation during the summer. TYPICAL FUNDING UKEU students - full or partial fees bursaries may be available from the School. Entry Requirements

An upper-second-class Honours degree or above, or international equivalent, in international studies,/politics or a related discipline is preferred.
