Masters Degree , Construction And The Built Environment

Course Description

Technology, Design and Environment Department of Real Estate and Construction Accredited by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). MSc PMBE is designed to meet the growing demand for project managers who can oversee the entire life cycle of any project, including unique developments such as the 2012 Olympics. It is ideal for anyone with ambitions in built environment project management. A good first degree in any subject, and in some cases an alternative qualification or equivalent experience, is sufficient for full-time study. Applicants for part-time study should also have at least six months work experience in the industry. Prior learning may be accredited. Meeting industry criticism that MSc courses are sometimes too academic and discipline orientated, MSc PMBE adopts problem-based learning (PBL) to ensure that it is real-world focused and holistic. Real problems cross discipline boundaries and require research and collaboration. The course develops the skills and experience this needs, with guidance from us and industry advisers. Not only is this more effective, it is more fun than the traditional study and examination approach. This approach will enable you to develop a whole range of management skills and important knowledge including project finance, technology, law and contract. You will do this through working on real-life or realistic problems as experienced by the industry, consultants and clients. You will also be exposed to behavioural aspects of managing projects, which is an opportunity most project managers only have when their careers are well-advanced. We continue to receive strong support for our approach to facilitating learning and recognition of the features, eg problem-based learning (PBL), that set it apart from existing related UK master s courses. In addition, we consult extensively with people from a wide spectrum of companies and organisations in order to make sure that the course content remains practically relevant. Course content The course will develop knowledge of current practice and issues as well as skills in relating it to situations which simulate real life as much as possible. The emphasis is on interdisciplinary problems. Among the issues covered are: * technology * sustainability and risk factors in design * emerging procurement methods to meet new demands to collaborate and new competitive challenges * behavioural aspects of managing projects such as negotiation and communication in all its guises * handling uncertainty and paradox * responding to risk and opportunity * responding to constantly changing demands in areas such as environmental change, law and regulation, and international flux of people and competition.
