Technology, Design and Environment School of Arts The programme of learning is centred on individual studio practice, and is informed by a mixture of formal taught components (including lectures, presentations and seminars), individual tutorial (offering reflection and formative consideration of practice), and cultural visits (a part of the programme content). The first 30 weeks (ft) or 60 weeks (pt) involves the following compulsory modules, constituting part one of the full master?s award: Module 1: Practice and Context This involves undertaking a critical review of students? current practice to date and requires contextualization of this practice appropriate to master?s level study. This is supported by the development of practical enquiry, re-establishing practice through research, accompanied by tutorial and seminar discussions. This will be assessed by exhibition, andor presentation of visual research enquiry. Module 2: Research Methods This module aims to introduce issues pertinent to all research students such as research processes, research management, ethics, intellectual property, referencing and alternative strategies. It will also investigate methods of enquiry, focusing in particular on the relationship between practice and theory. A range of theories will be introduced to provide students with methodological tools with which to consider their practice. This will be assessed by a research journal or log and oral seminar presentations. Module 3: Fine Art Drawing Practice This is a negotiated practice-based research project, examined by exhibitionpresentation. Fine Art Practice is supported by group critiques, individual tutorial support and a series of lectures delivered by staff and visiting lecturers. This will be assessed by exhibition, andor presentation of visual research enquiry. Module 4: Research Paper The evaluation document should be a reflective and analytical document focusing on aspects of material practice through appropriate research methodologies, with particular emphasis on the work undertaken in Fine Art Practice (Module 3). This will be submitted in the form of a written paper. The second part requires a further 15 weeks of practice for the final module: Module 5: Advanced Studio Practice Advanced Studio Practice involves the exhibitionpresentation and completion of a substantial body of original work that represents the level achieved through individual creative, critical and professional practice at master?s level (Level 7). This will be assessed by exhibition. We offer a range of courses to help you meet the academic and English language entry requirements for this course and also familiarise you with university life.
