See http:www.swansea.ac.ukpostgraduateopendays for dates and booking information _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Childhood Studies explores how children develop from birth, how they acquire the ability to learn and think for themselves, and how their development is influenced by their families and the communities they live in. It explores topics from broad historical, psychological, and sociological perspectives and examines the rights of the child in reference to the UN Convention. The MA in Childhood Studies is designed for a wide range of professionals working with children from birth through to eighteen. A broad range of topics are covered and students are encouraged to critically reflect on their practice and address theory and research relevant to their own interests. For the first time, students on the programme are also able to take a module in the Montessori Method that is being validated in partnership with MCI London. The course will: ? Reflect upon the nature of childhood as a concept and the way in which it comes to be construed as it is ? Consider holistic child development in contemporary society ? Reflect on childhood and family policy in a variety of contexts ? Consider professional roles (one?s own and others) in relation to services for children and their families ? Encourage critical analysis of research in relation to childhood ? Encourage professional reflective practice Who should take this programme? The course is open to anyone who has an interest in childhood studies and is relevant across a range of contexts. Prospective students might include teachers, social workers, health care professionals and new graduates from a variety of disciplines. This course may be particularly beneficial for those who wish to extend their knowledge as part of continued professional development. It might be used to enhance career prospects or as a means of pursuing a particular research interest. There is the opportunity to participate in the annual field trip to Scandinavia.

 

Entry Requirements

The normal entry requirement of MA Childhood Studies is a 2.2 (or above) degree in a related discipline (for example childhood studies, education, psychology, sociology, mental health), or its equivalent.
