The programme examines international law in the 21st century in action and evaluate the way in which international relations and politics interact with the international legal system. What you study The core modules Introduction to International Law and Human Rights and Globalisation, International Trade and Development run between September and January. Both core modules introduce you to current international law, international human rights issues and international trade law, and advanced legal research methods and skills. The module International Law and Human Rights provides a general introduction to the theoretical basis and main aspects of international law, while Globalisation, International Trade and Development focuses on the way in which globalisation has affected multilateral trade relations between countries in furtherance of the developmental objective. Between January and May you study Law of International Trade and Development. This module studies the way in which the multilateral trading system supports development as an objective. It examines the theories of international trade and identifies the main theory which influences the regulation of the multilateral trading system today and if this theory supports the goal of development. The module also analyses the historical aspects of international trade regulation, the GATT and the WTO. To complete the degree successfully you then write a dissertation. This module allows you to carry out your own research, and synthesize and apply the knowledge you have accrued from the programme, subject to the availability of appropriate supervision. The dissertation is an opportunity for you to focus on a specialist research area, whereas the core modules are designed to give you the contextual tools for the advanced study of international law. How you learn The teaching on this programme is student-centred, to develop an understanding of methodology, practice and presentation. You develop the necessary comprehensive and critical understanding of techniquesmethodologies appropriate to research and advanced scholarship by attending workshops and seminars in the core modules. These skills enable you to make informed contributions to the workshop discussions. Research skills are further developed during the seminars and workshops in the optional module, when you target your research towards more specialist fields of enquiry. This provides a platform from which you can proceed to complete coursework for optional modules and your own dissertation. How you are assessed The diverse range of assessment on this programme seeks to develop the skills which are essential for successful work at a postgraduate level. Individual presentations on Globalisation, International Trade and Development and other option modules allows you to demonstrate a critical and systematic understanding of the relevant issues.
