The Environmental Mapping MSc is designed to appeal to students looking to understand the environment. It provides the opportunity to study at an advanced level the ways in which spatial data can be collected, processed and analysed to map and understand the environment. What and how will I learn? Students receive core training in mapping science, analytical methods, GIS, image processing, and other fundamentals of geomatics. They develop techniques for the acquisition of data including satellite remote sensing, GNSS and LIDAR, alongside techniques for the analysis, processing, interpretation, and display of spatial data. Degree Structure Students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of six core courses (60 credits), optional courses (60 credits) and an research project (60 credits). Core Modules Mapping Science Computing for Image Analysis Image Processing and GIS Principles and Practice of Remote Sensing GIS Data Analysis Analytical Methods Dissertationreport All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words. Options OPTIONS MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Environmental Geoscience Advanced Topics in GIS 1 Airborne Laser Scanning Geomatics for the Coastal Zone Positioning 1 Topographic Mapping Advanced Topics in GIS 2 Geomatics for Ocean Management Research Methods in Geomatics Terrestrial Laser Scanning Image Understanding Spatio-Temporal Data Mining Vegetation Science The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, tutorials, transferable skills training, compulsory computer training and research supervision. A field programme is held in Spain for students following the advanced course in Geoscience. Assessment is through unseen written examinations, coursework, a dissertation and an oral presentation.
