The Fine Art MFA is a studio-based and research-centred programme supported by studio-led seminars arising from the creative and critical interests of students and staff. Students are admitted into one studio discipline: painting, sculpture or fine art media (which includes electronic media, photography, print, film and video). What and how will I learn? The programme aims to provide an intellectual and creative environment in which talented fine art graduates may develop their individual potential as professional artists and pursue independent research in their chosen studio area whilst developing a critical awareness of the broadening intellectual and cultural contexts of fine art. Degree Structure Students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of one studio discipline (75%) and a core course in Critical Studies (25%). Core Modules Critical Studies Dissertationreport All students undertake a critical study of an equivalence to 3,000 words, which may be in a form other than a conventional written essay, though not of an exclusively visual nature. The taught component is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Assessment is by review, a 3,000 word essay, an oral presentation and a final examination of studio work in the form of an exhibition. Why should I study this degree at UCL? Exceptionally, an applicant may be considered whose previous education and professional experience are deemed by UCL to be equivalent to graduate level.
