Course Description

This programme provides an introduction to the Akkadian and Sumerian languages, and to the cuneiform script. An introduction to some of the less well-known languages of the Ancient Near East may also be provided, and seminar work on the history and archaeology of the Ancient Near East is available as an option. The programme is carefully structured and sufficiently intense to equip you with the knowledge and capability to undertake research on cuneiform texts. In some cases it may be possible to combine the classroom element with fieldwork in the Near East andor experience of work in a museum with significant Near Eastern holdings. Hands-on experience with cuneiform tablets forms an important part of the programme. It may be used as preparation for doctoral research, but it also provides the chance to undertake significant research (a 20,000-word dissertation) as an enrichment of undergraduate study and for career development purposes. We recommend that you discuss your proposed research with a potential supervisor before applying.
