Course Description

This MSc in Civil Engineering is offered for civil engineering and related graduates wishing to enter the profession and who choose to study a general Masters-level course rather than specialising in a particular subject area. The MSc in Civil Engineering allows students to tailor their studies to meet the needs of their chosen career path by offering a wide range of modules which can be selected, together with a wide choice of individual research projects. Breakdown of course The course is made up of a total of 180 credits, 120 of which are from taught modules and a research project forms the basis of the remaining 60 credits. The taught modules cover the four main core themes of Civil Engineering: Structural, Water, Geotechnical and Transport Engineering, plus a compulsory 20 credit module on Finance and Core Skills. Optional modules offered Each of the following optional modules are worth 20 credits: Advanced Structures and Design Civil Engineering Risk Management Construction Management Engineering Structural Dynamics (includes a minimum of 10 hours teaching on earthquake-resistant structures) Environmental Fluid Mechanics Flooding and Water Resource Management Ground Engineering Maintenance of Roads and Bridges Road Asset Management Road Design, Safety and Environment Road Economics and Financing Soil Mechanics Sustainable Construction Water Quality Management Being flexible in its nature, this MSc in Civil Engineering permits every student to tailor the programme of studies to suit their own chosen career, benefiting from the range of specialist modules available to all MSc students. Learning and teaching The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project. Entry Requirements

Applicants for admission to the MSc/PG Diploma should normally hold, or be expecting to achieve, a good first degree (Bachelor or Master level) or other approved qualification at an equivalent level.
