Overview

Our University has come a long way in a short amount of time and we currently have over 17,000 students of which 1,500 are international students from around 130 countries. We have a strong professional orientation with a focus on academic excellence and graduate employability. By way of illustration, we are recognised as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the UK and graduates from the National Centre for Computer Animation have worked in Hollywood on such films as Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Star Wars, Madagascar and King Kong.

Our vision is to be recognised worldwide as a leading university for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge and enriching society through the fusion of education, research and practice.

Bournemouth University has more than 19,000 students and we are ranked as one of the top 200 young universities in the world, but our ambition doesn’t stop there.

Our research shapes and changes the world around us, providing solutions to real-world problems and informing the education we deliver. Our students are a key part of the research we conduct, co-creating knowledge with us and playing a crucial role in everything that we do. In the Research Excellence Framework 2014 96% of our research was defined as internationally recognised or higher, with 72% deemed to have an outstanding or very considerable impact on society.

Our vision of Fusion brings together these three key elements of education, research and practice, creating something which is greater than the sum of its parts. Through the impact of our research and education, and the contribution of our staff, students and graduates, we are able to deliver the third aspect of our purpose, to enrich society.

Bournemouth University benefits from a wonderful location, situated between one of the UK’s newest national parks, officially the best beach in Britain (according to TripAdvisor, 2018) and the second largest natural harbour in the world, with the World Heritage Jurassic Coast located nearby. Good transport links means that London is only two hours away.

With all this activity comes a responsibility to the environment and we are delighted to hold the EcoCampus platinum award for our work in making the university sustainable. From bee hives to solar panels, free or subsidised bus journeys for staff and students and a raft of other initiatives, we continually seek to increase our sustainable impact.
