Edward Alleyn, the famous Elizabethan/Jacobean actor, and contemporary of Shakespeare and Marlowe, led ‘My Lord Admiral's Men', a celebrated company of players, and owned the Rose Theatre, the Bear Pit on Bankside, Southwark and the Fortune Theatre in Cripplegate.
