Programmes to inspire you The University College’s postgraduate programmes offer a learning experience of the highest quality that will further enhance your life skills as well as advancing your knowledge in your chosen field. Staff research firmly underpins and enriches all of our programmes and students who wish to undertake a research degree will be supported by experts in their field. Supporting students is core to St Mary’s mission. We pride ourselves not only the academic support we provide but also on our pastoral and social support, taking into account the unique needs of postgraduate students who have to balance their study with other commitments. We will help you in achieving your goals by offering a flexible approach to your study where possible and fitting in with your needs. Taught Masters Programmes The University College offers a significant portfolio of taught Masters programmes encompassing firmly established programmes, as well as a range of new and innovative programmes to meet the needs of today’s employers and society. The majority are offered on a part-time basis although some can be undertaken full-time for those who want more intensive study. There are exit points at postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma level offering flexibility in the type of award gained, depending on your circumstances and aspirations. All programmes are modular, offering even further flexibility to your studies. Research Opportunities The University College has a vibrant research culture and environment, providing an individualised and highly supportive environment for postgraduate research degree students. We offer a series of training opportunities for research students as well as an annual Research Student Conference at which all students are required to present. Academic staff from across the five Schools at St Mary’s are engaged in both national and international research. In the 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) our research in Theology, Divinity and History and English Language and Literature an Education and Sport-related studies was ranked as world- leading and internationally excellent. St Mary’s will be increasing the breadth of its submission in the Research Excellence Framework in 2014. The well established culture of research and scholarship is further evidenced by excellent research links with other institutions both at home and abroad, as well as with community organisations and groups. We offer the opportunity to study for an MPhil/ PhD, working on your research project alongside highly experienced researchers. Details of the areas where we can support research can be found on the College website. A research degree involves defining your own area of research enquiry, working closely with a team who will guide and support you. You should, however, be aware that a research degree is very much an independent piece of work and as such requires the ability to structure and manage your own time. You should have a good first degree and or Masters, and academic interest that closely coincides with the academic expertise of a member of staff. Further details on entry requirements and the application process can be found on the website. You will need to discuss your application with a member of supervisory staff in your field. Master of Philosophy (MPhil) An MPhil is normally in the region of 40,000 words in length and is usually completed within two years full-time and four years part-time. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) A PhD is normally in the region of 80,000, and no more than 100,000, and is usually completed within 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. In both cases you will be examined through your thesis and by viva voce examination. All students who have not already completed a relevant Masters degree, or other appropriate postgraduate research methods training, are required to complete a suitable research methodology course early in their registration as part of their programme of study.
