History t he I oe was founded in o ctober 1902 as the London Day t raining College. In 1932 it became the largest central activity of the u niversity of London as the Institute of e ducation, and during the late 1940s and 1950s it was responsible for the education and training of one in four new teachers in e ngland and Wales. In 1987, a royal charter set the seal upon our status as an independent college of the u niversity of London. t oday, our overriding goal is to improve the quality of life of individuals and societies through our work in education and social research.
